Columbus Youth Bicycle Helmet Ordinance

In order to promote safe bicycling among Columbus children, in July 2008, Columbus City Council voted unanimously to pass the Columbus Youth Bicycle Helmet Ordinance.

The law requires that children and teens younger than 18 wear a helmet while riding bikes and scooters, or while using skateboards, in-line skates or roller-skates. The helmet must be certified by the CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission), be fitted to the child’s head, and be buckled under the chin.

 NEED A BICYCLE HELMET?

Thanks to the Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation, for a limited time Columbus children and teens ages 1-17 can receive a free bicycle helmet at select Columbus Fire Stations.
