Columbus Youth Helmet Ordinance

Numerous local and state organizations have come together to form the Columbus Bicycle Safety Coalition. The coalition was created to promote safe bicycling for children in Columbus. Currently, the coalition is working to promote the adoption of the Columbus Youth Bicycle Helmet Ordinance that is currently under consideration by Columbus City Council. If passed, Columbus would join 21 other Ohio cities, 21 states, and more that 150 local jurisdictions in the United States in preventing head injuries among children by requiring the use of bicycle helmets.

Studies show that, when worn, bicycle helmets can prevent up to 88% of traumatic brain injuries in the event of a bicycle crash. We know bicycle helmets work, but the difficulty is in getting children to wear them. Multiple studies have shown that education alone is not effective in achieving adequate helmet use rates, but a bicycle helmet law combined with education is effective. At least 15 published studies have shown that bicycle helmet laws increase helmet usage, and at least 6 studies show that these laws lead to a decrease in traumatic brain injuries.

The new Columbus Youth Bicycle Helmet Ordinance requires children under the age of 18 years to wear a bicycle helmet when they bicycle, skateboard, or use non-motorized scooters, in-line skates or roller skates.

We would like to thank the members of the Columbus Bicycle Safety Coalition for working hard to support a helmet ordinance to protect the children of Columbus.
